2009 NAEMSE Award Recipients

Pittsburgh, PA- The National Association of EMS Educators was pleased to honor several individuals during the 2009 NAEMSE Educational Symposium & Trade Show in Orlando, FL the week of August 17th. Recipients are nominated by their peers and then chosen by a committee of NAEMSE members prior to the Symposium.

HEROES AWARDS

Rosemary McGinnis, EMS System Coordinator at the Community Hospital of Ottawa in Ottawa, IL was awarded the Unsung Hero Award in honor of her years of dedication to the EMS education community. This award is given to an individual who, although not nationally known, makes an incredible difference in the lives of those he or she teaches.

The Fallen Heroes Award was created to honor individuals in EMS Education who, though no longer with us, had an incredible impact on the EMS education community. This year’s Fallen Heroes include:

Earl Field, EMT, Illinois
Lige Turman, MS, EMT-P, Tennessee
John B. Smith, EMT, Maryland
Dr. John Marsh, M.D., Maryland
Dr. Fred Miltenberger, M.D., Maryland
Mark Coyne, RN, NREMT-P, Wisconsin
Jim Coy, EMT-B, Illinois

Lastly, the committee initiated a new award this year, The Legends That Walk Among Us Award. This award is given to those individuals who have mentored and supported EMS education on a national level:
David Page, Minnesota
John Todaro, Florida
Dr. Keith Wesley, Wisconsin

JAMES O. PAGE SCHOLARSHIP


The James O. Page Scholarship was created in order to enable NAEMSE members to attend the annual symposium who may not otherwise have the means to do so. This year’s recipient was T.J. Bishop, Clinical Division Chief at North Country EMS in Yacolt, WA.

 

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD


NAEMSE was proud to award the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Baxter Larmon. For more than 35 years Dr. Larmon has been actively involved in Emergency Medical Services. Dr. Larmon is currently a professor of emergency medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and also founding Director of the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care which promotes, educates and disseminates EMS research. Dr. Larmon is also recognized as a leader in academic prehospital care, he has presented at more than 450 conferences in his career. Dr. Larmon has won both of the premier Faculty Awards at the David Geffen School of Medicine; The Golden Apple Award and the Award for Excellence in Education. In 2000, the Journal of Emergency Medical Services named Dr. Larmon as one of the most influential persons in EMS.
