Keys to Student Mastery of EMT Training is a unique and engaging book that every EMT instructor should read and have on their shelf as a valuable reference. The authors wrote in a style that speaks directly to the adult student learners and it is an essential tool to help save students who are at risk. Every page is filled with practical and masterful keys with an emphasis on applied techniques. Many learning strategies, such as the use of mnemonics, subconscious techniques and mind mapping are described with practical examples and clear descriptions of how and why they work, along with primary references. The practical tasks are engaging and fun, and very brief, both in description and execution.
Stepping into an EMS class as an adult learner is a daunting experience. The new EMT student is faced with learning a new vocabulary, a new set of challenging psychomotor skills, new ways of communicating, new ways of gathering information, and new ways of thinking – all to be performed competently under the pressure of life and death urgency. In the past, EMT students were often taught by EMT instructors who were seasoned EMTs who had little or no formal training as educators. The National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) has been working for more than 15 years to help raise the level of EMT training through instructor conferences, training programs, and developing learning resources, such as textbooks. While EMT training has come far, EMT students and instructors have had few practical and specialized textbooks that focus on the highly specialized and challenging field of EMS. With Keys to Student Mastery of EMT Training, that has changed.
