Click here now to renew your NAEMSE MembershipUPDATE FROM ADVOCATES FOR EMS Click here for an overview of the election (seats won and lost/margins) and a list of priorities for President-Elect Obama, members of the transition team and a list of those who are listed as potentials on the short list for cabinet members. This cabinet list is nothing more than rumors at this point. Democratic Congressmen and former Clinton White House advisor, Rahm Emanuel has accepted the job of WH Chief of Staff. This is the first and only appointment to date. We will send out periodic updates as we learn more about Committee changes in Congress, additions to the administration, etc. Congress will reconvene on Nov. 17th to resolve committee chairmanships and assignments. Of note, Congressman Henry Waxman, current Chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has challenged Congressman John Dingell for Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. As you may know, Congressman Dingell is the current Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee and that Committee has jurisdiction over the grant programs at HHS, health care reform and the Ryan White Care Act which Advocates has been conducting Hill meetings on in conjunction with IAFF, IAFC, NAGE and NVFC. In addition, click here for a summary of the Obama health plan and click here for a new document from John Podesta's Democratic think tank, the Center for American Progress (CAP), on heath care reform that was released this week. As you may have heard, John Podesta, former chief of staff to President Clinton, is running the Obama transition team along with Obama's Senate Legislative Director Chris Lu. I hope you find this information useful. Please let me know if you have questions. As I have said, we will be sending out information on a very frequent basis in the coming months with information as the new administration and agenda begins to unfold. NHTSA Update NHTSA is pleased to announce the initiation of its "Solutions for Safely Transporting Children in Emergency Vehicles" project, a partnership between the NHTSA Occupant Protection Division and NHTSA's Office of Emergency Medical Services. The primary objective of this two-year project is to develop a set of recommendations for the EMS community to use to safely and appropriately transport children in a ground ambulance from the scene of a crash or other emergency incident. Components include a comprehensive literature review, the development of draft recommendations, and the convening of a National Meeting to discuss and finalize the recommendations. Maryn Consulting, Inc. has been contracted by NHTSA to complete this project; Maryn staff will work with NHTSA and national experts in the field to perform this work. An initial stage of this project is the literature review, which will examine existing written resources regarding this issue. Potential resources to be reviewed include peer-reviewed journal articles, web-based publications, papers presented at national meetings and training curricula. If you are aware of any particular resources or references that are relevant to this topic, please forward them to Laura Caldwell-Aden of Maryn Consulting at laura@mci-it.com by November 21, 2008. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Alexander (Sandy) Sinclair of the NHTSA Occupant Protection Division at sandy.sinclair@dot.gov or Dave Bryson, of the NHTSA Office of Emergency Medical Services at dave.bryson@dot.gov.
